I tried to do last week’s end user domain sales report during DOMAINfest, but some whois servers didn’t like my mobile connection. So it’s a bit late, but hopefully just as useful.

Let’s start off with sales from Afternic.

American Airlines bought the name of its Chairman, TomHorton.com, for $1,000. This was a smart move given that the company is about to battle its unions in bankruptcy. Its public relations firm owns TomHortonSucks.com.

Nashville Wraps, which sells wrapping paper, gift bags, and other packaging supplies, paid $1,700 for GiftWrap.net.

New York Life bought ExecutiveBenefit.com for $1,510.

Dance entertainment producer Break The Floor Productions bought DanceNation.com for $7,500.

Precious Moments, Inc., maker of collectible figurines, paid $X for YourPreciousMoments.com. for $1,088.

Ontario rock climbing gym Climbers Rock Inc. bought KeepClimbing.com for $1,521.

Used bicycle retailer Cycle reCycle of San Jose, California bought BicycleBlueBook.com for $6,500. It’s safe to say the company is working on a used bicycle price list.

The Wind River Visitors Council bought WindRiver.org for $2,788.

Lawyer referral service MyLawsuit.com picked up PatentReview.com for $2,250.

Bloomington, Illinois dentist Mike Milligan paid $1,200 for SnoreStoppers.com.

The Nature Conservancy bought PlanetChange.com for $2,625.

These two sales were at Sedo:

Social Finance, Inc., which hopes to shake up the world of student loans, upgraded its domain from Sofi.org to Sofi.com for a five figure sum (the sale price was retracted).

Virgin Music (EMI Group) paid $8,000 for TheNight.com at Sedo. Any music fans out there know what this is for?

Company protected brand with domain purchase but doesn’t use it yet.

Best Buy’s Super Bowl commercial yesterday promotes what Best Buy calls “Phone Freedom”, although it doesn’t call it that by name in the ad.

But it helps explain why the company paid $2,588 to buy PhoneFreedom.com last month.

I received an email promotion from the company today that touts phone freedom:

At the bottom of the email is a link to BestBuy.com/phonefreedom.

Paying such a small price for PhoneFreedom.com certainly makes sense, even if the company doesn’t plan to push traffic to PhoneFreedom.com. It’s good for brand protection.

That said, I’m baffled by the decision to not at least forward PhoneFreedom.com to the Best Buy site. I think someone dropped the ball here.

Two GoDaddy.com Super Bowl commercials drive new sales record.

The results are in…

Regardless of what you thought of GoDaddy.com’s two Super Bowl commercials yesterday, they appear to have had the intended result for the world’s largest domain registrar.

According to the company, yesterday saw its highest sales ever for a Super Bowl Sunday. This is the company’s eight consecutive year advertising in the Super Bowl.

The company also says that .co saw a tenfold increase in registrations. That’s an early number from last night. Last year .co reported a 35x increase compared to a typical Sunday. Although I doubt .CO Internet pays for its ad with immediate registrations, the Super Bowl ad goes a long way to building its brand. Don’t be surprised if proprietors of some new top level domains try this tact in future years.

GoDaddy was the only advertiser to include a QR code in its ad, and the company says it received record mobile traffic. I think this was a smart move given that many people are away from home when they watch the Super Bowl.
